Hugo nominations (part two)

I'd like to congratulate everyone on the shortlist for the 2008 Hugo awards — including myself. (Off to die of a surfeit of smugness now.)

NB: blog postings will be sparse this weekend; I'm at Orbital 2008, the British eastercon, where (as you can imagine) a number of last-minute panels and talks about Sir Arthur C. Clarke are hastily being arranged.

Ooh, up against Michael Chabon. Ooh, up against Ian McDonald.

The term "novelette" is excruciating. Sounds like something you do with eggs, not words.

2:

Congratulations again.

Meanwhile, Greg Egan is competing against himself, presumably in the style of Graham Chapman's wrestling sketch. In the Blue Corner, Greg "Bomber" Egan! And in the Red Corner, Greg "Bomber" Egan!

I'm glad to see "Blink" nominated in the TV section. That would make it three in a row for Stephen Moffat, if he wins; as "Blink" was even better than his previous winning episodes, it would be hard to discredit that achievement.

3:

Congrats!!! You deserve it! Just bought several of your books over the past few weeks at the local bookstore. I'm bummed that I'm almost out of new books to read. I might run out of excuses and have to actually start studying for my MCSE again.

4:

Congrats!

Ooh, not sure if I prefer Last Colony or Halting State tho! runs away (I'm a sucker for Space Opera, I admit)

5:

Congratulations, but aren't you getting bored with the it. You're on the list every year. Give someone else a chance. :)

6:

Congratulations!

I would have been extremely surprised had "Halting State" not made the final list. That said, the Novel category is rather strong this year. Best of luck for the voting.

7:

I hope SATURN'S CHILDREN is of similarly high quality so that we can give you a sixth consecutive appearance in the BEST NOVEL category next year. I'm hoping for an even dozen appearances in a row.

I'm glad to hear that Halting State got the nomination. I bought and read it shortly after it came out in the USA, though I wasn't sure how I would feel about the use of second person narrative. It turned out to be no obstacle; after a couple of chapters I was thoroughly immersed in the narrative flow. And I found this book a real pleasure to read, for reasons ranging from a well handled police procedural story to several passages that made me laugh out loud—as well as having some interesting serious themes. Nice work, and I hope this encourages more people to read it!

9:

Fantastic.

I'm just now - at last - reading Halting State, and it rocks.

Also, anything which depicts a Near Future in which Western Martial Arts are thriving has my vote, or would have if I had one....

10:

I've read Halting State and The Last Colony, and I think that's it for all of the "standard" categories. Greatly enjoyed both, but I would give the edge to HS.

Charlie (or anyone who knows): have you cracked the record for most consecutive Best Novel Hugo noms yet?

11:

Another set of congratulations.

And to #5: He's not to stop till he actually wins (if then).

JHomes.

Congrats!

I haven't read "Halting State" yet (still waitin' for the delivery) but I like other Charlie's works (especially "Singularity Sky") and wish him good luck! I also keep my fingers crossed for Ted Chiang and Gene Wolfe. They deserve to win.

Congrats! Everybody I wanted is up except for TNH for fanwriting.

Congrats! This convention will be in Denver (hometown) so I will get to go (my first). Will you be there?
