Public appearances

Thanks to the kind offices of my Italian publisher Delos Books, I'm going to be being interviewed in Second Life tomorrow (that's Saturday the 21st) at Sophrosyne's Special Salon, Saturday, June 21, from 1-2:30 pm SLT (that's 9-10:30pm in British Summer Time), in the Salon Room, Central Nexus at Extropia Core, Second Life (http://slurl.com/secondlife/Extropia%20Core/128/124/22). More details here.

(I also have a small signing tour of the south-west USA coming up in late July; I'll post the full details as soon as I can confirm the itinerary; for now let's say that it starts with Dragon*Con ComicCon International in San Diego, followed by appearances in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Phoenix — then I'm off to Denver for the Worldcon.)

Edit: And it completely slipped my mind — but the US mass market paperback of "Halting State" is officially published next week; if you order it from Amazon now (via this link) it should ship Tuesday.

San Diego in July would be ComicCon International (CCI), not Dragon*Con.

2:

Suffice to say neither DragonCon nor ComicCon are the kind of con I'd normally go to on my own ticket ...

Ah, the bitter irony - I live right across the street from the facility where ComicCon is held, and yet will be in Europe during that event. Generally not my thing either, but the Kevin Smith panels are always amusing. Even more fun - walking down the street in regular clothes and having some guys dressed up as [random Star Wars / comic book character] look at you like you're some kind of goddamned freak. Seriously, the crowd there is like a gift that keeps on giving.

Going to WorldCon, myself...

Ah - Phoenix in late July. Your publicist must be playing tricks on you. Nevertheless, that's my neck of the woods and I'm looking forward to it.

Well, San Diego should be okay: the convention center there is right at the edge of the bay. I'll have to ask the guy two cubes over about 'beach'; he's been to ComicCon and I haven't.

Kerry: I will be at Worldcon as well. (The tour ends six days before Denvention. I am not flying home economy class then flying back again 48 hours later.)

Eric: this is the publicist who thought I could get the train from Edinburgh to Dublin for my outward flight. She's from New York (and her grasp of geography seems to be a little hazy).

Hah! Well, expect it to be somewhat warmer than you're used to at home. July-August in Phoenix is what we call 'Monsoon Season' where daytime temperatures get up to 110F while humidity is high and there are frequent short, heavy thunderstorms. We also have 'Haboobs' - an Arabic word describing a wall of dust that precedes a thunderstorm in the desert. Talk about raining mud! Hopefully you won't have to experience that.

With regard to geographic ignorance: There are stories of folks in our neighbor state of New Mexico being denied credit card applications from East Coast banks because they don't reside in the US.

9:

Charlie, I have friends with press passes to ComicCon who have promised to come talk to you and take you out for a beer. It won't be so bad.

The paperback of Halting State is in the bookstores now where I live (London, Ontario).

Someone in the book-distributing business must like us.

I took a look around Extropia. It's a nice place! -- lots of exuberant, joyous Kool-Aid O_o. I'll be rooting for you! I'll be the one with the insect hooves.

12:

Hope to see you at COMIC CON (at the Mysterious Galaxy booth?) and get my ACCLERANDO and FAMILY TRADE books signed...

Along with a certain D&D Guide book, maybe?

Is there / will there be a transcript of the interview on second life? Unfortunately my laptop can't run second life and my toaster doesn't have any VGA/DVI/HDMI ports ...

May I add to the requests for a report on your experience on Second Life VR.

Remember, the graphics are better on radio and in ASCII.

@13 and @14: The Extropia Core hosts said they would post a formatted transcript once it's available, and Charlie said he'd link to it from here. So, soon I imagine ...

Actually their site has it posted here.
