Upcoming reading/talk

Next Wednesday, I'm doing a reading and interview in Kirkcaldy in Fife, at 7:30pm in the Central Library:

Fife Libraries & Museums bring you Sci-Fife, a series of events featuring some of the best known science fiction authors based in the UK ...
Charles will be appearing at Kirkcaldy Central Library on the 21st September, with tickets costing £3.50, (£3 Presmier/Super Fifestyle). Andrew Wilson will be hosting the Charles Stross event, and has the difficult task of keeping Charles on topic, and to time for the evening.
This is part of an on-going program of readings by SF authors; next up are Ken MacLeod and Hannu Rajaniemi during October/November.

(Update: Facebook event link.)

"He's one the Hugo award...". Do they mean "He's at one with the Hugo award...", then?

2:

If you've ever seen Charlie at a Hugo ceremony, probably not. Anyone less calm and serene on hearing he's won one when he he'd been going round saying why he wasn't going to is difficult to imagine.

Well, until Gerry Garcia this year.

My wife just read your story in "Fables from the Fountain". Her reaction:

She muttered something about "He's a dead man" and "shaggy duck story or was that shag the duck story" and considers burning down whole city blocks acceptable collateral damage to get back at you for it.

"I need steel wool to scrub my brain... Forget that. I'm just going to go downstairs and pour bleach into my ear. I feel very, very sick."

Congratulations. It was one of the most delightfully appalling things we've read in a very long time.

Actually it was an experiment :)

Michael Swanwick said (it is alleged) that all SF can be improved by the addition of dinosaurs and sodomy.

So I tested this empirically by taking a harmless little Arthur C. Clarke shaggy dog story and adding dinosaurs and sodomy ...

5:

Do you think you succeeded?

I played table-tennis with AC in about 1982 (CE) at the Otters club in Colombo. He beat me easy, but also trounced my mate who was the then east anglia TT champion.

Mind you I'm not saying that there was any gamesmanship comtributing to his victory over Andy, but there was, IMO.

7:

Bugger. Wrong thread.

How can I resist that sales pitch. :-)

Bought for my first serious test of the new Kindle.

Another sentence in the announcement caught my eye:

Tickets for the rearranged Charles Stross event are now¹ on sale at all Fife libraries.
Would "rearranged" refer to the event being rescheduled, or to the seating, microphones and such being shuffled around? Or should that have been "pre-arranged"?

[1] First read this as “…are even now…” and tried to visualize a rearranged Charles Stross. ² [2] Insert <ometicon/> here.

The event was originally scheduled for March, but was postponed because I was slightly distracted by my wife being in hospital for cancer surgery that week.

The source of the distraction having been successfully dealt with, we rescheduled the event: and she'll be along to heckle from the back row.

I'm hoping that the Clarke tribute becomes available in the US. Barnes & Noble doesn't list it, and Amazon only has it for Kindle which does me no good. And the publisher it apparently having trouble with their site.

12:

Remember to refer to the place as "Kirk-coddy" rather than "Kirk-Caldy," otherwise they will sense that you are not one of them and eat you.

Consider yourself warned.

13:

And be careful crossing The Bridge

14:

I have visited Fife (and escaped to tell the tale) on previous occasions.

Seems the reference to that was several months old, but still no idea about US availability. Guess I'll have to be patient. http://newconpress.co.uk/books/fables-from-the-fountain/
