• Commented on Quantum of Nightmares: spoiler time!
Before I got distracted by this talk of UPSes I had just popped in to say thank to Charlie for the shout out on twitter for Scholars of the Night. Liked the intro and it seems like my reading life...
• Commented on Quantum of Nightmares: spoiler time!
Speaking as a borderline geek who finds much of it too much of a PITA to bother with these day, there are very few consumer use cases for a UPS if you live in a UK town or City. If...
• Commented on Quantum of Nightmares: spoiler time!
I never quite figured out what Mary’s superpower was, the bag being her dads?...
• Commented on Empire Games (and Merchant Princes): the inevitable spoiler thread!
One problem for a early phase Jaunt based civilisation could possibly be the availability and generation of Engrams. Neither the Commonwealth or the USA have done more than scratch the surface of available TL’s which suggests to me that perhaps...
• Commented on Empire Games (and Merchant Princes): the inevitable spoiler thread!
I maybe misremembering but didn’t Huw come across an airless TL that wasn’t the Hive TL in Merchant Princes? The Hive TL strikes me as a crappy elimination TL as it requires Rita to be in TL4 unless there’s also...
• Commented on Empire Games (and Merchant Princes): the inevitable spoiler thread!
Cross timeline trade is complicated by most of the Commonwealth territory being congruent with USA allies, and most high tech TL2 countries being covered by the French Empire in TL3 including China. I believe Japan is nearest Commonwealth Ally with...
• Commented on Empire Games (and Merchant Princes): the inevitable spoiler thread!
Good point. My brain has just solved for it by wanting submarines to breech like a whale prior to jaunting. And would ARMBAND for a sub be an orange inflatable with speedo written on it? But it does beg the...
• Commented on Empire Games (and Merchant Princes): the inevitable spoiler thread!
I think you meant Trident is a SLBM right? Or did you mean SLCM? I wasn’t thinking of cruise missiles as an option but it’s a valid point....
• Commented on Empire Games (and Merchant Princes): the inevitable spoiler thread!
I’m not convinced that’s true though. Modern submarines are covered in anechoic tiles (think rubber) and use propulsors rather than screws - so what actually’s not insulated? Don’t forget a worldwalker can jaunt with just their foot wear isolating them....
• Commented on Empire Games (and Merchant Princes): the inevitable spoiler thread!
“ Why did the ~US attack TL4 with ICBMs ... rather than ARMBANDing the bombs over from TL2 Maryland? That's what they actually did. (Using SLBMs, too, flying a ballistic path from the Pacific Ocean, thereby obscuring their point of...
• Commented on Empire Games (and Merchant Princes): the inevitable spoiler thread!
I have one question. Before Juggernaut arrives overhead one of the antagonists makes a statement/assumption around the limited transfer capacity of Worldwalkers compared to what they can do with Armband. Was that a genuinely held USA belief or just a...
• Commented on Empire Games (and Merchant Princes): the inevitable spoiler thread!
It was strongly implied in one of the early Maracaibo scenes where they say the temperatures going to hit 40c and unsurvivable without AC. I just finished Invisible Sun and enjoyed it a lot - a fitting finale to the...
• Commented on Empire Games (and Merchant Princes): the inevitable spoiler thread!
I have a question from just finishing up my Dark State re-read. There is a quote from Miriam about playing CIV for real in the MITI build up of the Commonwealth. Did you create any tech trees to get them...
• Commented on Crib Sheet: Dead Lies Dreaming
I must thank the Memory Palace thread contributors. It’s inspired me to have another go at Serpents Reach by Cherryh. It’s the only one of hers I’ve bounced off hard multiple times....
• Commented on Crib Sheet: The Labyrinth Index
“ I am leery of assumption that "ceasing to be human" is automatically a bad thing.” Probably not, but I’m betting there is lots of authorly fun to be had telling tales about things that still think they are human,...
• Commented on Crib Sheet: The Labyrinth Index
For the triple word score. Am I right in thinking that in the Hotline Scene with the Nazgul it’s the first time it’s been explicitly suggested that the Senior Auditor isn’t entirely human as he sweats blood? Or do we...
• Commented on Crib Sheet: The Labyrinth Index
Re the Stasis Sphere it’s been a whilst since I read the Rhesus Chart but I recall it was strongly implied that Basil defrosted his meals before chowing down on them....
• Commented on Crib Sheet: The Labyrinth Index
Presumably actively trying to get someone to disbelieve in a god is analogous to asking someone not to think about purple elephants?...
• Commented on Crib Sheet: The Labyrinth Index
Thanks Charlie. Another one - the Opa have their own flavour of vampires, presumably obtained once the events of the Rhesus Chart got disseminated. Presumably due to them having at least a couple of low level resources in the Laundry?...
• Commented on Crib Sheet: The Labyrinth Index
Halfway through re-reading it now. One thing that puzzled me first time round and continues to do so is why the OPA are choosing to take such a long term route to bootstrapping a God as the Matroskia brain plan,...
• Commented on Lying to the ghost in the machine
Spoilsport ;) Next you’ll be telling us that Kangaroo’s can’t use SAMS. https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/shoot-me-kangaroo-down-sport/...
• Commented on A Quick Infomercial
Nope I was talking about the Tor-US only,Escape from Puroland....
• Commented on A Quick Infomercial
Something interesting - if you click on the google play store link on the tor pre-order page it takes you to to a page on the UK Play store which appears to allow pre-orders. No guarantees it won’t get corrected...
• Commented on Dead Lies Dreaming: Spoilers
You are forgetting they are not properties - they are merely financial instruments in an investment portfolio. It’s the functional equivalent of forgetting one of your many bank accounts or that semi famous self portrait of the minor 17th century...
• Commented on Dead Lies Dreaming: Spoilers
Assuming for a second it was put to sleep by something/someone rather than fell asleep as lack of mana (oxygen) made it sleepy, then I assume it will be coming back pissed off and angry. It seems to me that...
• Commented on Upcoming Attractions!
Just downloaded my copy now. Can I just say that the opening line is one of Charlie’s best!...
• Commented on The Laundry Files: an updated chronology
I think EC hit the nail on the head. Nearly everything we know about Blue Hades is based on Ramona - who is explicitly described as a hybrid, possibly gestating/pupating towards full Blue Hades-hood or could equally be just a...
• Commented on Dead plots
You’ve not read Peace Talks yet then?...
• Commented on Dead plots
It’s implied but worth noting that many of Charlie’s caveats only apply if you are a fairly aware and socially engaged left of center tending author. I can’t see the average Baenauthor* being particularly concerned by many of them for...
• Commented on Roll the dice
At the risk of getting a ban. Psionics :p...
