Or will it be too late, since once the gate had been opened, it was far too late to stem the power ......

  So you're hoist by your own petard? ;) I guess what I mean is, how do you see the concept of neoteny applying to AI? Certainly they're likely to retain cognitive flexibility but in a very different way....
