I don't know how much my own experience in Vietnam in a largely conscript service matches what's happening now in an all volunteer force, but I can tell you that despite homosexuality being an explicit way to get out of being drafted there were a lot of gays in the US Army then, and most of us didn't give a rat's ass about it. There is no difference between theology and law. Sure there is. In a non-theocratically-governed society we can ignore theology if we choose and not be harmed. Try ignoring tax law (unless you have a hell of a lot of money for tax lawyers) and see how that works for you.
