Please accept my delayed condolences for your losses. Being able to function at all, much less creatively, in the wake of repeated tragedy shows great strength. Your writing has given me great enjoyment for many years. Thank you....

From my point of view I try and not think everyone in Canada thinks digging up tar mixed with sand is a great way to fuel our future. But Canada does support the Tar Sands. Many, possibly most, Canadians don't (at least outside Alberta), but Canada (the country) does. Not a policy I agree with, and indeed one I'm working to change, but it doesn't change the fact that Canada currently supports the Tar Sands....

Fossil fuel is Free Money! It's just lying there in the ground begging to be dug up, sold off and burnt to meet the energy demands of everyone. I can't think of anywhere that has fossil fuel resources that can be got at and extracted at reasonable cost that isn't digging and pumping away like there's no tomorrow. Fracking is maybe considered infra dig in some circles and deep-mined coal is getting scarcer but the Norwegians are still operating their North Sea oil and gas rigs, Texas is littered with oil wells and gas headers, the Chinese are digging up...

Nojay Have you been asleep the past 10 years? Since someone with your moniker has been posting here, I suspect not. So how have you erm, NOT NOTICED that non-fossil "fuels" are getting cheaper by the month, to the point of - very soon - it really is going to be cheaper than oil or coal. Or that, with a couple of specialist exceptions, & in spite of (still) sitting on top of megatonnes of coal, we are not actually digging it out of the ground any more? Fairly soon the penny really will drop, even in AUS & Texas....

And that ties back to my point about saying everyone in a country agrees with every policy? Or not?...

Coal extraction and consumption worldwide increased by 3% last year, nearly all of it 'thermal' coal for power stations. I've not checked but oil was probably flat, not decreasing much since there's been less transportation going on. Gas production worldwide went up 6% and is still on an upward trend, displacing coal for electrical generation in many places for various reasons. The press breathlessly reports every wind turbine farm and solar plant being brought online but studiously ignores the new CCGT facility being built in an anonymous grey building close to a gas pipeline terminus and a main grid interconnector...
