I wrote about this a few years back and came to some similar conclusion (http://www.eclectic-consult.com/mooseblog/2013/06/25/am-i-a-grown-up-yet/). The notion of the preprogrammed and the rewritable self are particularly interesting to me and part of my daily work with clients (I'm a psychologist)....

Ever Young?
Was curious, so I looked them up. "Gatekeepers" and "Orange Tips" are univoltine and "Holly Blues" are bi/trivoltine, at least according to the first google hits. For Orange Tips, https://www.amentsoc.org/insects/glossary/terms/univoltine http://www.lepi-photos.com/011gatekeeper.html http://britishlepidoptera.weebly.com/012-celestrina-argiolus-holly-blue.html So, from my above reference This study has identified a hitherto unknown sensitivity of univoltine species to extreme precipitation during their pupal life stage. Was there extreme precipitation this year during the pupal life stage of the Gatekeepers and Orange Tips? If it's weather extremes, this is not a good thing because it's a lot harder to remediate increased weather extremes/numbers of weather extremes than to reduce pesticide...

Ever Young?
"People acting in ways that align to their shared interests without any direct collusion, ..." And you are STILL missing the point. FAR more is done by collusion or instruction that falls short of a formal conspiracy, and both traditional ethics and the law regard that as very different from the ordinary dynamic of groups with a common interest. Your apparent attitude that, if does not pass the normal conspiracy test, there is nothing improper about it, is precisely WHY things are getting worse....

[I]f does not pass the normal conspiracy test, there is nothing improper about it But that isn't what I think at all. I apologise if I gave the impression I'm neutral about "business as usual" or that I'm making some sort of equivalence argument. What I mean is that it's unnecessary and arbitrary to draw a moral line at the concept of conspiracy. Ordinary group dynamics around a common interest can be working toward an objective that is BAD, and fully acknowledged to be so even by those participating. Not being a "conspiracy" doesn't make something okay. We need to...

I may owe FE / NN/ HB / Cd an apology, it seems. Vladimir Putin has just won the US election. Will there be a US election in 2020 or will Trumpolini manufacture a state of emergency? Though I think it is more likely that he (DT) will go down the standard route for destroying a democracy as used by Erdogan, Putin & Musso. Voters who are, from his pov “questionable” will find their voter-registrations invalid, the press will be attacked & civil rights mangled or set aside. As usual women will be the worst off – look forward to...
