I saw the Checkov gun, but wasn't sure where it was going to go. Initially when it was revealed I thought the bladder was going to be heated, If only for the pay off line 'it boils your piss'. hey,...
  • Commented on Upcoming Attractions!
Don't think PP could get there -she might be an Asian woman ( ticks in boxes Labour haven't done ), BUT the the thing that will stop her is she is repulsive at the electoral level.Every new report is negative....

  • Commented on Upcoming Attractions!
Last book managed to arrive about a week before the official release date at MyLocalBookshop (tm). Read it the same day. Order from Local Bookshop. No guarantees - in fact I wouldn't expect them to be one time due to...
  • Commented on All Glory to the New Management!
I've usually read the book , then sought out the source - read that and then reread charlies. Missing bits get filled in ( sometimes)...
  • Commented on Roll the dice
think there would at first be more board games, like Space Hulk of the early 90's with Elves as the enemy. Then it might become cool to be sporting the fashions of the Host (something along Harry turtledove's Colonisation series,...
  • Commented on So you think you can be a reality TV producer
Have to admit I was pretty much the same -sucked into FiF despite it being terribly formulaic. I think the fact that it was done under such time constraints made everyone go 'yeah that could have been me' towards the...
  • Commented on Ask me anything!
From what I've googled yes you need Java for OO.o. LibreOffice is actively being developed while OpenOffice is not. Only makes a difference when interacting with MS docs. Personally Office 97 was good enough for my needs....
  • Commented on Ask me anything!

  • Commented on Ask me anything!
Oh and its Calc program has the wonderful behaviour of not trying to work out the data and then moronically mangle it. e.g Range values 1-5 will translate to 1st of May (for UK locale ). OK, undo. Oh I...
  • Commented on Ask me anything!
Other way round - Open Office (iirc ) was StarOffice which Sun acquired way back. It morphed into OpenOffice, which was actually very useful for fixing borked Word Docs. When Oracle bought Sun, OpenOffice forked into LibreOffice. OpenOffice then got...
  • Commented on Ask me anything!
Couldn't be us Brits - a runway? We've been arguing about a third ruinway (typo but keeping it ) for Heathrow for I'm not entirely sure how long, maybe 30 years ? More? The one in the US would still...
  • Commented on Ask me anything!

TIL where the Hawkwind track (from QS&C) got its name....
  • Commented on Ask me anything!
Strossian Iron Man vs those works? Saturn's Children alone is worth it to pass on Iron Man. Although I'd love to hear how you would have spun it if it was your bag. Comics are a funny one - never...
  • Commented on Ask me anything!
You've mentioned it a couple of times over the years , but what was the backstory behind you being asked to write for the Iron Man movie?...
  • Commented on Ask me anything!
If you get chance to, try the Talisker 8 year old special bottling that came out last year. Divine. If I'd bought a case then might have been worth keeping long term, but could only buy a max of 2...
  • Commented on Three pieces of news about the Laundry Files (UPDATED!)
I totally get that - both my parents went in the last 2 years and I'm still sorting out the mess left behind. It was a sincere expression of excitement....

  • Commented on Three pieces of news about the Laundry Files (UPDATED!)
The REG stare in the tearoom in Withnail & I is the look I see when you said he was the template for Angleton's glare, pity the rest of his features don't match. Come to that The Register's founder Mike...
  • Commented on The Inevitable Brexit Thread (1)
Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords should be a system of government. Right now, I'd take it....
  • Commented on Lessons learned: writing really long fiction
Ah the 2 book, no third situation explains why I'll never find out about Michael Kring's Space Mavericks and what happens when they go to Charon . Shame that both the novelist and the audience (slim that it might be)...
  • Commented on Brexit! Means! Brexit!
For WTO rules as we can set our own tariffs on goods,so set the import tax on Port and Spanish wine at 10 Yew staves per Firkin of wine. We'll tax exports of wool again with proceeds back to the...

  • Commented on I get book covers
Just reminded me, I still don't have the new covers for the first two - I've got the 'Red Hand' and 'Rain Face' versions. To be honest they were one of the reasons I bought them - their abstractness really...
  • Commented on Trapped in the wrong trouser-leg of time
The wrong trouser leg of time was somewhat sent up by Richard Herring's As It Occurs To Me audio extra podcast ( number 3 ), where he imagines what would happen in a world where Trump didn't win and listens...
  • Commented on Book day!
Just finished the first pass read - I tend to devour the overall story very quickly and then go back a couple of weeks later for the juicy morsels left over. This one will definitely take several gnawings. Wow. A...
