  Has anyone ever noticed how many exciting fictional characters, whether freelance or agents for state-sponsored bodies, behave like the actors behind conspiracy theories. The idea sells. It must have a certain semi-conscious appeal to the mass audience. OGH has the Laundry. There was Bulldog Drummond and Simon Templar. There is James Bond (now with Royal Approval), and there was Modesty Blaise. Some of this may be linked to the long secret war against Communism, but it was around before the 1917 Revolution.
