Re: the ongoing meme of slave-holding as a motivation in the American Revolution. The British believed that Loyalism was strongest in the South. Whether that was true or not, they believed it and then perversely started to try freeing slaves to fight for them as well. Large numbers of Northern slaves were manumitted by service in the Colonial Army. Vermont became a quasi-state at the time and started completely free.
