The difference between biology and engineering in this respect is how opaque biology is. It's not the large code base or how much documentation there is, it's not the lack of human designer making it impossible to understand the system...

I think that you misunderstood my point. I was responding to a posting that stated that ordinary human hormones were a problem in waterways, even after treatment. I was saying that was not so. OK. Sorry to misunderstand. IANAE. The way I read it, before around 1985 estrogen levels in drinking water were undetectable. Then the chemists found ways to detect lower quantities and did detect them. They found synthetic estrogen compounds and their degradation products at higher levels than the natural ones. So there was the question whether these levels could cause problems, and it made sense to test...

Whenever I hear about hormone mimics (or any other pollutant) decreasing male fertility, I can’t help but think "With world population being what it is, how is decreasing fertility a bad thing?"...

"... how is decreasing fertility a bad thing?" Yes, I agree. Ah, you first. Seriously, it isn't just reduction in sperm count. There are a grab-bag of symptoms, including mal-formed sperm, birth defects (possibly with fewer sperm total the bad ones don't get outcompeted as often?), baby boys with malformed genitalia, etc. The numbers appear to be increasing but for some things maybe we're just keeping better records. It isn't clear why the numbers are increasing. Hormone analogues give us a story that make sense -- they're supposed to affect that, that is affected, it all fits together. But there...
