Mo's sudden fear of Bob being the new Eater of Souls is a little unexpected to me. He's had the powers since The Fuller Memorandum. The ending of that book literally concluded with Bob's recovery which included him being afraid...

Dawkins would probably say, that's what memes do, they travel. The crossword writer interrogated by government agents in WW2, for using Normandy landing codenames as puzzle entries, must have gotten his ideas innocently enough. They figured that as a schoolteacher with the son of a military planner in one of his classes, how hard would it have been for the kid to overhear words like Juno, Omaha and Golden whispered furtively at home and then quite naturally ask his teacher what the words meant, sparking a mental association for use in his other job. Likewise, if a fan, agent or...

Whole-series re-read done. (Well, the books anyway; I didn't re-read all of the short stories.) TAS is my favorite book in the series so far, with TFM a close second. I'll not make any excuses; I like my protagonists struggling. And I love Mo, warts and all. Not much up to interpretation for Mo's state of mind by the end of the story; it's all in the text. About a fifth of the way through my second reading of The Annihilation Score, I'm hoping to spot more subtle points that I missed the first time through. At the moment I'm wondering about the first Professor Freudstein caper. Maybe it was just dumb coincidence that this happened at the same time as Strip Jack Spratt was being a public nuisance. But of course long time Laundry readers would be expected to chalk up Spratt's sudden demise to a geas biting him - I certainly did! It had the signs of such a thing and was awfully convenient timing otherwise....

Still averting gaze, half-way through (have I mentioned being a slow reader lately?), but doing the iPad equivalent of ctrl+F to see if some things have been mentioned. In case it matters, Fretboard shows up on pg.186 too. No comments about T-LEAF? By any chance, does Mo's Magic Mascara contain the ashes of Black Cat Placenta? As in: "Who wishes to see [demons] should take the after-birth of a black cat, the offspring of a black she-cat, the first-born of a first-born, roast it in the fire, pulverize it, then fill his eyes with it, and he will see them."...

Possibly, but black cat placenta would be one of the nicer ingredients. Note that the Laundry, not the most scrupulous of organizations, has the recipe but declines to make any more....
