Brief hiatus

I'm in Yokohama. It's foggy, the daytime temperature hits 30 degrees with 60% humidity so it's like walking around in a sauna, and while the trains are great, I wouldn't recommend Ferris wheels as a tool for overcoming jet lag. More later, when I'm fully acclimatized and have something to say.

I went on that monster ferris wheel in Yokohama, it was fun. It would be a scary ride if it wasn't all enclosed in glass.

Welcome to Japan. And yes, it was much worse earlier this month (don't mention july). Japanese usually have a small, wet towel with them, which is quite useful in that weather.

Try the view from the top of the government building (free lift) in Shinjuku, at night. It's the most incredible metropolis landscape I've ever seen.

I hope to see you at the WorldCon, and enjoy this strange planet that is Japan!

Hi Charles,

Just thought you might like to know that I've just reviewed The Jennifer Morgue and Halting State (both UK editions) on my blog =D

I hope you have a great trip, Charlie! I just purchased Jennifer Morgue yesterday and I can't wait to sink my teeth in it! :-D

6:

Come to Trinidad, Charlie!

No, seriously, come to Trinidad.

Wouldn't a dry towel work a bit better? At least for a while? :)

@ 7:

No, a wet towel (use cold water). Really helps on such days.

9:

Wait, wait. 60% humidity is like a sauna for you? That would be a really dry day for me -- both here in Puerto Rico, where our dry days are 72% (I check) and in Indiana in the summertime where our dry days are anything less than 98%. I'll see your Japan and raise you my entire life.

Also: why is a writer of ninja fiction only now visiting Japan?

Also also: I just finished Glasshouse. Double plus wow!

Michael @9: This is Charlie's first public visit to Japan. Previously he visited in ninja-mode; silent, invisible.

As for the Cosmo Clock-Ferris Wheel, I have a thing about heights and big glass windows; I'm not going up in that thing. Maybe if they let me lie on the floor....
